A bridge to undergraduate study
What is a Foundation Course?
International students who have completed their high school education with fewer than 13 years of schooling, and who wish to begin their first degree in the UK, will usually need to complete a foundation course. It is a one-year preparation course that provides additional English language and academic preparation to enter a UK undergraduate programme.
For school-leavers from a non-British curriculum, it acts as a bridge between their current qualifications and UK university entry requirements — closing the academic gap, improving English, and introducing learners to UK life and culture.

Foundation Course Types
Foundation courses prepare learners across a wide range of subjects — including business, finance and management, computing, law, art and design, engineering, social science, medicine, science and pharmacy, media, and humanities.
Some providers hold university partnerships and offer guaranteed progression to a chosen undergraduate degree on successful completion with good grades. Many programmes are delivered on campus, giving students full university status and access to facilities including libraries, equipment and sporting facilities.

Foundation Course Requirements
Foundation programmes typically require a minimum IELTS score of 4.5, with no element below 4.0. The checklist below summarises the standard supporting documents you will be asked to provide.
