What is a Research Programme?
Research programmes, including MPhil, PhD and professional doctorate routes such as the DBA, are the highest level of academic study. They are built around an original piece of research that makes a contribution to knowledge or to professional practice in your field.
Rather than following a fixed taught syllabus, you work with an academic supervisor to define a research question, review existing literature, select an appropriate methodology and defend your findings in a thesis and viva examination.

How the programme works
Duration and structure
A full-time research degree typically takes three to four years, while part-time study usually takes four to six years. The first stage focuses on the research proposal, literature review and methodology; the middle stage on data collection and analysis; the final stage on writing up and examination.
Progress is reviewed at formal milestones with your supervisory team, ensuring the work remains focused, ethical and achievable within the registration period.
3-6 years
Full-time or part-time registration, reviewed at annual milestones.
Supervised
A dedicated supervisory team guiding your research journey.
Thesis and viva
Original contribution defended in an oral examination.

Entry requirements
Research applicants are assessed on academic background, the quality of the research proposal and the availability of appropriate supervision.
- Minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent, with no element below 6.0
- A recognised master's degree in a subject related to the programme
- A cumulative grade point average above 3.0 on a 4.0-point scale, or equivalent
- A detailed research proposal outlining question, context and methodology
- Two academic references and a full Curriculum Vitae
- Scanned copy of passport and visa
